Norman David is a Philadelphia-based soprano saxophonist, composer, arranger, author, and music educator. As leader/composer or sideman at venues in the U.S., Canada and Europe, he has performed and recorded with numerous jazz luminaries and all-star ensembles. His jazz composing has been recognized with grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the American Composers Forum.
Among his current activities, he continues to direct, play with, and compose for The Eleventet, an electrifying jazz ensemble that he founded 45 years ago. He also fronts and composes for a number of other projects, including Group 4 and Ensemble Six Plus.
David’s textbook, Jazz Arranging (Scarecrow Press 1994), continues to be adopted for course work at many colleges and universities. His second book, The Ella Fitzgerald Companion (Praeger Publishers 2004), an examination of the development and artistry of that great American singer, is on the shelves of hundreds of academic and public libraries in the U.S. and abroad.
